Fan-Made Superman Animated Film Short

Taking the music from old Superman serials, and recruiting TV's Superboy (John Newton) for the voice of Clark, Pratt concocted a one-minute prequel to an alien invasion that begs for more.

[Source: Syfy] If you look closely at the recently released photo of Andrew Garfield in his Spidey gear, you can just make out a pair of metallic doodads on his hands. Emma Stone confirms what sharp-eyed fans have deduced: that Peter Parker builds his web-shooters in Marc Webb's reboot.

Even though, in the comics, science whiz Peter Parker invented the gizmos that would allow him to shoot webs from his wrists, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy turned them into a biological process—a side effect of the same spider bite that gave Peter his powers. (That, in and of itself, might be a remnant from James Cameron's time on Spider-Man: In his 1991 treatment for an abandoned Spidey movie, Peter discovers the bio-organic web spouts after a particularly gooey dream.)

But on the Golden Globes red carpet, the new Gwen Stacy seems to have confirmed that the new webslinger will swing mechanically with three simple words:

"It's a device."

Muggle Quidditch at C2E2
Calling all wizard fans, sports fans and any comic fan looking for a sweepin' good time! The sport of wizards comes to C2E2 this March.  This past fall, 750 players from over 46 colleges and high schools from around the country participated in the International Quidditch Association's fourth annual World Cup in New York City. That event launched the game into the spotlight, with over 10,000 spectators in attendance and more than twenty million more watching media coverage of the event on forty channels. Now the IQA is bringing the game to C2E2, with two college teams leading an exhibition match, followed by open matches for attendees to sign-up, learn the game and start playing! Thor (May 6) 

This year we'll see comic books, fairy tales, current bestsellers and classic novels come to life on the big screen. You'll have to wait until 2012 for theA-list superheroes like Spider-Man, Batman and even Superman to return to yourlocal megaplex. In the meantime, there's "Thor." Unlike those others,this superhero is not a millionaire with a dark side or a high school kid withunusual insect bites. No. Thor is a god! This movie gives fans a chance to seethe mighty warrior (played by Australian actor Chris Hemsworth) in his ownflick. You'll see him next fighting along side Iron Man and the Hulk in thehotly anticipated "Avengers" movie, which also comes out in 2012. 

Pirates of the Caribbean:On Stranger Tides (May 20) -- Jack Sparrow is back, which isn't surprisingconsidering the huge piles of booty raked in by the last three flicks. Thistime Sparrow teams up with his old nemesis Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) andhis old flame Angelica (Penelope Cruz) to track down the Fountain of Youth.Blocking their path is Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and a host of supernaturalbaddies that includes zombies and mermaids.

The Hangover, Part II (May 26) -- If there's one place onthe planet that can top Vegas in terms of sin, it's the red-light districts of Thailand. Andthat's where Phil (Bradley Cooper) and Alan (Zach Galifianakis) head for Stu's(Ed Helms) bachelor party. It's safe to assume that the party goes horriblywrong. The production landed itself in the news last year with word of twohigh-profile cameos. Bill Clinton appears briefly, perhaps the onlyex-president out there appropriate for a "Hangover" movie. MelGibson, after a lot of screaming and yelling, will not be in the flick. 

Transformers: Dark of the Moon (July 1) --"Transformers 2" might have made over $400 million domestically, butjust about everyone from hardcore fans to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura tostar Shia LaBeouf admits that the movie just wasn't that good.Michael Bay has promised that this flick will bebetter and reportedly will have cooler action and less "dorkycomedy." Also absent from this go-around is Megan Fox, replaced by Victoria's Secret modelRosie Huntington-Whiteley. 

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (July 15) --It's taken just about ten years for everyone's favorite boy wizard to have hisfinal face-off with He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named. While the previous Potter movie,the first half of J.K. Rowling's tome, started with some high-flying action(literally) only to level into a long stretch of angst, exile and self-doubt,this movie looks like it's going to be one long breathless chase to thatwizarding Gotterdammerung, the battle of Hogwarts. 

Cowboys & Aliens (July 29) -- Han Solo and James Bondstar in a Western about aliens. Do you really need to know more? It's averitable tiramisu of Fanboy awesomeness. Jon Favreau of "Iron Man"fame directs.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1 (November 18)-- After the wild success of "Eclipse," Twi-hards everywhere are waitingwith bated breath to see how Stephenie Meyer's final book in the Twilightseries is going to be adapted. Thematically, "Breaking Dawn" ismarked with less moony-eyed longing than the previous books and with moreshocks, including a graphic, not to mention icky, child-birthing scene. How canthis movie possibly be faithful to the text and keep a tween-friendly rating ofPG-13? The producers are remaining tight-lipped about the whole thing, but theydid bring in Oscar-winning filmmaker Bill Condon to direct. We'll see if the"Dreamgirls" director can find a way to satisfy both fans and theMPAA.

The Muppets (November 23) -- Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and the rest of the gang is finally getting a reboot after a twelve yearabsence from the silver screen. The same guys responsible for "ForgettingSarah Marshall" -- Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller -- wrote thescreenplay, so expect the same silly comic sensibility as "Marshall" -- thoughpresumably with a lot less nudity. There are few public details about "TheMuppets" although Amy Adams, Zach Galifianakis, Paul Rudd and RickyGervais along with Segel do reportedly star.

Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol (December 16) -- TomCruise reprises his role as the seemingly indestructible IMF agent, Ethan Hunt.Not much is known about the plot aside from a couple of pictures with Cruisedangling from the tallest building in the world -- Burj Khalifa in Dubai. If that seemsincredible, it's just as well. The movie's director, Brad Bird, previouslydirected "The Incredibles." Jeremy Renner, Ving Rhames, JoshHolloway, and Simon Pegg also star.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (December 21) -- StiegLarsson's book might just be one of the most compulsively readable books outthere; it's a relentlessly riveting murder mystery that turns the popular viewof Sweden from a nice quiet country that makes great furniture to a hotbed offamily jealousy, investigative journalism and hidden crimes. It also featuresone of the most memorable literary characters in memory -- the punk-rock hackersavant Lisbeth Salander. It's not surprising then that film producers snatchedup the movie rights faster than you can say lutefisk. A well-crafted Europeanversion of the movie came out in '09, but now it's Hollywood's turn, featuring director DavidFincher, fresh off his soon-to-be-Oscar-winning flick "The SocialNetwork" and starring Daniel Craig, Christopher Plummer and Rooney Mara asSalander.

Young Justice is an American animated television series created by Greg Weisman and Brandon Vietti for Cartoon Network. Despite its title, it is not an adaptation of Todd Dezago and Todd Nauck's Young Justice series of comics, but rather, an adaptation of the entire DC Universe with a focus on young superheroes. The series follows the lives of teenaged heroes (some of them sidekicks) who are members of a fictional covert operation team — called Young Justice — of its celebrity-level famous adult counterpart, the Justice League. The main setting is the fictional universe of Earth-16, during a time period in which superheroes are a relatively recent phenomenon. Firebreather Premieres this week!

The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes

[Source: Wikipedia] As the world's most dangerous villains break out, six of Earth's mightiest heroes assemble a freedom fighting alliance called the Avengers. The Avengers line-up initially includes Ant-Man, Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, and the Wasp. Black Panther and Hawkeye will join the main roster as the series progresses.  

Premieres October 20, 2010 on Disney XD. Expect to see 52 episodes for Season One.

Young Justice - Coming November 2010

[Source: Wikipedia] Young Justice focuses on the lives of a group of teenaged superhero sidekicks and protégés attempting to establish themselves as proven superheroes and as teenagers dealing with adolescent issues grounded in the context of their personal lives.

Background 

The show is set in Earth-16, a DC Multiverse world, and corresponds to the present time of our world — a time period Vietti has called "a new age of heroes." The recently founded (three to four years in activity) Justice League is a powerful organization of superheroes who find themselves becoming "high-powered, high-wattage celebrities" tracked closely by the public. As it grows increasingly difficult for the Justice League to operate outside the spotlight, the supervillains take advantage of their opponents' prominence while becoming better at organizing and working under the radar. Meanwhile, the teenaged sidekicks of several Justice League members feel they are ready to graduate on to the next level and become more independent. Consequently, Batman organizes the teens to fill the need for a covert operations team while keeping their protégés under their authority.

Continuity 

Although Young Justice follows a continuity considerably different from that of mainstream DC Universe, Weisman has stated that the series covers its early stages. Earth-16 was chosen by DC Entertainment for the show because it was largely untapped, freeing the series and its franchise from established continuity restraints set by either DC Universe or other Multiverse worlds. There are crucial differences in the line-up of teenaged superhero sidekicks from those of Teen Titans or Young Justice series of comics. Dick Grayson and Wally West were chosen over Tim Drake and Bart Allen/Impulse because the former characters were the first incarnations of their respective superhero identities. Miss Martian was added because the date of her arrival to Earth could still fit in the early DC Universe concept. Aqualad, as opposed to Robin, is the leader of the team. Arrowette was replaced by Artemis in the producers' desire to focus on the latter's storylines. Some of the Young Justice characters' ages are tweaked from those of their original counterparts. However, the spirit and the intent of the characters are said to be kept.

Superman/Batman: Apocalypse on DVD this September 28

Superman/Batman: Apocalypse is a direct-to-video animated film based on the Superman/Batman comic storyline "The Supergirl from Krypton" and is a sequel to Superman/Batman: Public Enemies. The art style is partly based on that of Michael Turner, who penciled the Superman/Batman comic book arc. The film is the ninth in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies line released by Warner Premiere and Warner Bros. Animation and the first sequel in the line. It is set to be released on September 28, 2010. The film stars Tim Daly as Clark Kent/Superman, Kevin Conroy as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Andre Braugher as Darkseid, Summer Glau as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, Susan Eisenberg as Princess Diana/Wonder Woman, and Edward Asner as Granny Goodness.

After a spaceship splashes down in Gotham City Harbor, Batman and Superman encounter a mysterious Kryptonian with powers as great as those of the Man of Steel. The Kryptonian is soon revealed to be Kara, who is the cousin of Superman. Superman takes her under his wing to educate her about the ways of Earth. However, the villainous Darkseid has other plans. Big Barda has just escaped and Darkseid is looking for a capable fighter to take over the Female Furies. He sends Granny Goodness to abduct Supergirl and brainwashes her so he can gain control of her, utilizing the powerful Kryptonian to do his bidding. It's up to Batman, Wonder Woman, Big Barda and Superman to save Kara, but they'll have to take the fight to Darkseid within his hostile world – where unknown, deadly threats lurk around every corner, including a brainwashed Kryptonian able to match Superman blow-for-blow. They recruit Big Barda since she has intimate knowledge of Darkseid's home and was able to escape Apokolips before.

Ryan Reynolds As Green Lantern!

[Written by Mike Ryan] Green Lantern's alter ego, Hal Jordan, was known as the man who knew no fear. Ryan Reynolds, who is the star of the movie of the same name, is living up to that reputation. In new a new photo showing Reynolds in his "Green" getup, which hugs his every muscular ripple, little is left to the imagination.

The buzz for next summer's blockbuster-in-the-making reached a fever pitch this week when photos of Reynolds as Green Lantern emerged -- particularly the one that graces the cover of the July 23 issue of Entertainment Weekly. At first glance, even a casual fan might notice that Reynolds's costume has a painted-on look. That's because it is digitally "painted" onto the actor's body.

For filming, Reynolds' actual costume that he wears on set is full of sensors, much like the suits that athletes wear when lending their on-field moves to video games. After the scenes are shot, the sensors allow for the costume to be added via post-production technology. The reveal of Reynolds' computer-created costume has garnered reactions that range from praise to saying the thing makes Reynolds look a little "silly."

Soon after the EW cover emerged, a second set of photos were released, featuring Reynolds with his co-star and on-screen love interest, Blake Lively. Lively -- who, to the chagrin of her admirers, appears fully clothed in the photos -- plays Carol Ferris, the daughter of an aerospace tycoon who hires Hal Jordan as a test pilot. The photos also depict co-stars Peter Sarsgaard, Tim Robbins, and Angela Bassett as their "Green Lantern" characters.

This version of "Green Lantern" is, thankfully, a far cry from what was almost unleashed upon the world around five years ago. Jack Black, not a man known for his physical prowess, was originally cast as Green Lantern in what was to be a spoof described as a "zany comedy version a la 'The Mask.'" Black and Warner Bros. (also the studio behind 2011's "Green Lantern") eventually scrapped the idea because of pressure from DC Comics (the creators of "Green Lantern") and the backlash over Black's casting.

For those not in the know: Green Lanterns (yes, plural) are basically an intergalactic police squad that divided the universe into 3,800 sectors. Hal Jordan, an Earth-based test pilot, is selected by the Green Lantern Corp. to patrol sector 2814. Every Green Lantern is given a power ring that is capable of creating a quasi- energy-beam version of whatever the user desires. If Hal Jordan wants to fight crime with a giant corkscrew, the power ring will create a giant corkscrew.

"Green Lantern" is due for a June 2011 release. On July 24, at Comic Con in San Diego, the cast (Reynolds, along with co-stars Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong and director Martin Campbell) will be making their first public appearances associated with the film. It's unclear if Ryan will be looking like the lean, green fighting machine he is on the EW cover: according to Us Weekly, Reynolds separated his shoulder earlier this week during a mishap on the film's New Orleans set.

Attention all obsessive comic fans! Set your mood dials to "outraged." Wonder Woman, one of the most popular superheroes of all time, is getting a new look.

Even casual fans of the Amazon Princess can spot her famous threads a mile away. Blue shorts with white stars, a bold bustier, and bright red boots that make Superman's look downright tasteful. All that's about to change, though. Starting with this month's comic, Wonder Woman starts wearing pants.

You can almost hear the fanboys screaming. But, according to a popular blog from CNN, there is a reason for the switch. Writer J. Michael Straczynski, who is taking over writing the comic, commented on a DC Comics blog post, "I wanted to toughen her up, and give her a modern sensibility." She's been saving the world for 69 years. If you ask us, it's only fair that she finally treat herself to some new threads.

So, what are the specifics? The biggest news is that she'll lose the hot pants, and wear tight blue pants instead. The famous bracelets are still around, but, according to Straczynski, they'll be more colorful, "with a script W on each of them that form WW when she holds them side by side…and if you get hit by one of them, it leaves a W mark." As Straczynski puts it, "this is a Wonder Woman who signs her work."

But it's not just Wonder Woman's appearance that's been changed. Her back story is different, too. The New York Times explains: "In the reimagining of her story, Wonder Woman, instead of growing up on Paradise Island with her mother, Queen Hippolyta, and her Amazon sisters, is smuggled out as a baby when unknown forces destroy her home and slaughter its inhabitants." Clearly, this is a darker version for a more dangerous world.

Not surprisingly, the news of Wonder Woman's new look and history inspired huge searches on Yahoo!. Lookups for "wonder woman changes," "new wonder woman," and "wonder woman outfit" all roared to life. Others wanted to know more about Wonder Woman's alter ego. (FYI, she goes by the name Diana Price when she's not kicking criminal butt.) And lest you think her classic look will simply fade away, consider this: Searches on "sexy wonder woman outfit" have already started their ascent in preparation for Halloween.
